On 5 June, WORM held an online webinar on Waste management in humanitarian field hospitals. 28 participants joined this session, contributing to a more sustainable humanitarian medical sector.
The webinar addressed key challenges and shared practical solutions for improving waste management in field hospitals, drawing on the WORM project’s latest findings. Practitioners and researchers exchanged experiences, innovations, and recommendations to enhance safety, environmental responsibility, and operational efficiency in humanitarian settings.
During this workshop, we explored
- Gasification and alternative waste treatment options
- Waste segregation in mobile clinics
- Waste management in field hospitals
- Development of waste management guidelines for humanitarian field hospitals.
The session concluded with an interactive Q&A, where participants discussed practical implementation challenges and the importance of integrating waste management into broader public health strategies.
Key takeways of the webinar
- Waste management remains a crucial, yet frequently underestimated, aspect of humanitarian health interventions
- We need to move beyond traditional, environmentally harmful practices by exploring innovative solutions such as gasification.
- Integrating waste management across all phases of humanitarian operations not only improves operational efficiency but also reinforces health and safety standards.
- Field-adapted guidelines, like those developed through the WORM project, offer valuable tools to scale these practices and support more sustainable, resilient humanitarian health responses.
