WORM Workshop on “Sustainable Livelihoods for Informal Waste Pickers and Innovative Business Models”

The AidEx Conference was an opportunity for the WORM project to showcase its latest progress and strengthen collaboration with key humanitarian and environmental stakeholders through an inspiring participative workshop on “Sustainable Livelihoods for Informal Waste Pickers and Innovative Business Models“.

This workshop highlighted the efforts of the Kenya National Wastepickers Association Welfare Association, providing insights into its mission to advocate for waste pickers and its partnership with local governments and NGOs. This partnership aims to reduce landfill waste by 40% by 2025, while ensuring fair compensation and dignified working conditions.

The collaborative workshop focused on:

  • Addressing the unique challenges of Nakuru landfill and celebrating community-led advocacy successes
  • Identifying social, economic, and environmental risks and opportunities for waste pickers
  • Exploring circular economy models and inclusive strategies tailored to the Kenyan context

Finally, through dynamic breakout sessions, participants exchanged valuable insights, shared local experiences, and proposed practical solutions to build a more sustainable and inclusive informal waste sector.

A huge thank you to all participants for their energy, ideas, and active engagement!
