WORM Workshop #3 – Waste Management in Humanitarian Operations: Reduction and Minimization
Description
Humanitarian aid operations are some of the largest contributors to pollution and waste generation, across the value chain. During humanitarian aid operations, the idea of environmental pollution and degradation falls down the hierarchy of key priorities. WORM aims to address and understand the phenomena and support humanitarian aid organisations in assessing the environmental impact of their activities. The project focus is on waste generation and management across the value chain looking from upstream activities such as extended producer responsibilities and procurement practices all the way to waste collection and treatment, especially within the context of the circular economy.
This half-day symposium gathers key stakeholders, locally, regionally and internationally, to discuss key issues within waste management in humanitarian aid operations. Including academic research centres, humanitarian medical organisations, humanitarian logistics specialists, waste management providers, and other key stakeholders, the showcase and discussion for this symposium will include:
– bio-based technological innovation solutions within the humanitarian context
– procurement as a gatekeeper for waste avoidance and innovation integration
– innovations and improvements in waste management and treatment
– sustainable livelihoods of waste pickers
– policy development and advocacy
The symposium will include keynote sessions breaking down the WORM Project, breakout sessions examining specific facets of WORM, and a physical showcase detailing the progress of WORM thus far.
