One of the key impacts of the WORM project is to increase awareness of the environmental damage caused by medical waste. To tackle this challenge, WORM partners Pamela Steele Associates and the Vietnam Red Cross Society have organized several Local Awareness Campaigns throughout the project. These initiatives aimed to advocate for and raise local awareness about improved waste management practices in their specific contexts.
In total, WORM carried out four targeted, community-based campaigns in Kenya and Vietnam, reaching more than 4,200 people!
Let’s take a look back at the highlights of these campaigns!
WORM local awareness campaign in Kenya
The World Environmental Day in Kisumu County
In June 2025, for the World Environment Day, WORM partner PSA placed young artists at the heart of an environmental awareness initiative. Through drama, poetry, and visual art, they shared powerful messages about healthcare waste and its impact on both the environment and public health, inspiring their communities in creative and memorable ways. About 1000 educational materials (brochures, posters, pamphlets) were printed and distributed to further spread awareness on sustainable waste management practices.

The use of art to enhance local awareness on hazardous waste management in Kisumu County
To highlight the dangers of incineration and encourage sustainable waste practices, the campaign also turned to art. A series of murals were painted in hospitals across Kisumu County, engaging local communities while promoting proper waste segregation. These artworks illustrated safer methods for managing healthcare waste at the end of its life cycle, approaches that better protect both people’s health and the environment.
