Workshop – Waste Management adopted by EMTs and Field Hospitals during emergency reponses

Recap Workshop #4 – Waste Management adopted by Emergency Medical Teams (EMTs) and Field Hospitals in emergency responses

On March 5th, we brought together around 50 participants to discuss effective medical waste management during health emergencies. The workshop emphasized the importance of collaboration among Emergency Medical Teams (EMTs) to improve sustainability and environmental responsibility.

This webinar was a great opportunity to exchange ideas on improving medical waste management in emergency situations.

If you missed it, don’t worry—here’s a summary of the key takeaways:

    • We highlighted the importance of training personnel for proper waste handling and segregation, as well as the ecological and economic benefits of effective waste management practices.
    • The discussion emphasized the need to properly manage the significant amount of non-hazardous waste generated in healthcare settings to minimize the risks associated with improper disposal.
    • The session highlighted the importance of complying with local regulations and adopting effective waste reduction strategies.
    • We explored the waste management hierarchy and the complexities involved in managing medical waste.
    • We shared valuable insights into the decommissioning process for EMT activities, underscoring the importance of following World Health Organization standards and the critical role of reverse logistics.

We concluded the webinar with a breakout exercise to gather participant feedback on developing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for emergency waste management.

A special thanks to all the speakers and participants who contributed to making this workshop a success! Your expertise and collaboration are crucial in shaping the future of waste management in health emergencies.
